Mandatory paid sick leave laws keep spreading, and each state and city law is different. Minnesota and Illinois laws took effect on January 1, 2024, and California raised its minimum from 24 to 40 hours a year. Federal contractors must provide paid sick leave, and some municipal contracts require it in the fine print.
Rules vary widely. Vermont requires sick leave after one year of service while others require it after 90 or 120 days, New York and Colorado require it to be paid as it accrues, and some laws cover on-call employees.
Many states require unused PTO to be paid at termination but not unused sick leave, so this 75-minute webinar compares PTO with sick and vacation plans and how to move between them.
